  Toshio Iwamoto, Representative Director and Senior Executive Vice President of NTT DATA, has served for many years in leadership positions overseeing services for the public and financial sectors. We asked him about the social role and objectives of NTT DATA looking to the future, about the strengthening of project management in guiding system construction, and expectations for research and development (R&D) from a long-term perspective.

  Abstract
  During the NTT R&D Forum 2010, held on February 23–24, 2010, a panel discussion entitled “Carving out the Future with ICT Innovations” was held, in which Noritaka Uji, Senior Executive Vice President, participated as a panelist. This article reports on the discussions of the coordinator and panelists on themes such as “global deployment of ICT innovations to contribute to socio-economic development” and “activities to promote ICT innovation”.

  This article introduces technologies that support high-quality and high-reliability triple-play services on the Next Generation Network (NGN) and describes current trends in next-generation Ethernet systems. It is based on a lecture given in Japanese at the NTT Tsukuba Forum 2009 workshop held on October 15, 2009.

  This article describes trends in broadband services, the latest trends in optical access network technologies, and the direction of future research and development in optical access networks as fiber to the home (FTTH) comes to play a major role in the expansion of broadband services.

• Development of Digital Cinema Delivery System on the NGN

  

  Abstract
  This article describes a system for delivering digital cinema contents quickly, reliably, and securely to many movie theaters. It will support the trend for movie theaters to switch from an analog format to a digital one and the spread of the digital cinema concept.

Global Standardization Activities

• International Standardization of IPTV at ITU-T IPTV-GSI

  

  Abstract
  This article summarizes the current state of IPTV (Internet protocol television) standardization activities at ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union, Telecommunication Standardization Sector) in various technical fields. We are actively participating in ITU-T’s efforts to develop international standards that take into consideration the specifications of Japan’s IPTV services. A set of Recommendations for IPTV basic service was completed in September 2009. This enabled us to ensure that the Hikari TV IPTV service launched by NTT Plala Inc. in March 2008 conforms to international standards.
